Description

Are you on a diet where part of the goal is to be in ketosis?  Some diets recommend testing to find out whether your body is generating ketones, and the easiest and least expensive way to test for ketones is in the urine. Although it is not the most accurate way, it can be helpful to test, especially when new to a ketogenic diet.

Many Reduced-Carb Diets promote urine testing of ketones, and testing can be a useful way to tell if you are eating something that is higher in carbohydrate than you realized.

Different people will be in ketosis with different amounts of carbohydrate (and sometimes protein) so it can provide information to help you individualize your diet.

Note: If you are a diabetic testing for ketone levels for ketoacidosis, you will interpret the reading much differently than someone on a ketogenic diet who desires higher levels of ketones. If you are diabetic, please consult your physician. These strips are not intended to be used for the management of diabetes.

What is Ketosis?
Ketosis merely means that our bodies are using fat for energy. Ketones (also called ketone bodies) are molecules generated during fat metabolism, whether from the fat in the guacamole you just ate or fat you were carrying around your middle.
When people eat less carbohydrates, their bodies turn to fat for energy, which generates ketones.  Some of those ketones (acetoacetate and ß-hydroxybutyrate) are used for energy; the heart muscle and kidneys, for example, prefer ketones to glucose. Most cells, including the brain cells, are able to use ketones for at least part of their energy. But there is one type of ketone molecule, called acetoacetate/acetone, which cannot be used and is excreted as waste, mostly in the urine and breath.
If enough acetone is in our urine, it can be detected using a Ketone dipstick. Even though everyone is generating ketones continuously, this detection in the urine is what is commonly called "ketosis."

Ingredients

Ketone Test Strips consist of a Test Pad mounted on a plastic strip. Test Pad changes color as it reacts with ketones in urine. Color is visually compared to color chart printed on test strip vial label.

Chemical Composition: 7.6% w/w sodium nitroprusside, 92.4% buffer and nonreactive ingredients

Test Strips must be kept in their original, capped, labeled vial. Contact with moisture may cause incorrect results. After removing Strip from vial, immediately recap vial. - Store Test Strips in a dry place at room temperature below 86°F (30°C). DO NOT REFRIGERATE OR FREEZE. - Do not store vial in direct sunlight

Use within 2 months after opening.

Check for discoloration of unused Test Pad. Discoloration may occur if vial cap was not completely closed, or if vial was stored in extreme heat or cold.

Suggested Usage

How to Use the Test Strips:
1.You can either pass the test end of the strip through your urine as you urinate (be sure to get it entirely wet), or collect urine in a clean dry container and dip the test strip in.
2.Shake off excess drops of urine.
3.Wait 15 seconds and then compare the color on your strip to the color array on the side of the bottle.
4. Any color other than the original beige means there are some ketones in your urine, and the farther towards deep purple, the more ketones.
This does not necessarily mean that the darker the better. Some people find that a low-to-mid level of ketosis is the "sweet spot" for weight loss and feeling good.

Tips:
Be sure to store your test strips with the lid tightly closed. Any moisture or long exposure to air will cause the strips to not work correctly.

If you are dehydrated, the urine ketone concentration will obviously higher ("false positive"). This often happens in the morning to at least a mild degree. Likewise, if you are drinking a lot of fluids, the ketone concentration will be lower ("false negative").

Precautions

Please consult your health care practitioner before making any changes to your current diet or before beginning any herbal, vitamin, or homeopathic supplement regimen or exercise program.

Intended Use: This product is intended to be used by people with diabetes and people on low-carb diets at home to check for the presence of ketones in urine. This product is NOT intended for the management of diabetes.
